STYLX (Style File for ArcGIS)

GISBox is a one-stop 3D GIS data editing, conversion and publishing platform that supports editing in multiple GIS formats such as OSGB/GEOTIFF/RVT, converting to 3DTiles/Terrain and publishing.

Introduction

STYLX (ArcGIS Style File) is a style file format used by Esri’s GIS software (such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online). It contains style elements such as map symbols, labels, color settings, font information, fill patterns, etc., which are used to unify and manage the visual presentation of the map. STYLX files can be created and edited through the “Style Manager” of ArcGIS Pro, and can merge multiple symbols into one file to maintain the consistency of map design and facilitate sharing and reuse.

File Structure

STYLX is based on the SQLite database format and stores symbols and style elements in the database. STYLX files usually include the following elements:

  • Symbols: symbol styles for points, lines, and surfaces (polygons)
  • Color palettes: user-defined color schemes
  • Fonts: font information for labels and texts
  • Fill patterns: texture and gradient settings for polygons
  • Label styles: how text is displayed (position, size, color, etc.)

STYLX files can be used directly in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, or converted to JSON or XML for custom modifications.

Pros

1. Unified style: The same style can be used in multiple projects or maps to ensure design consistency.

2. High reusability: After creating a STYLX file once, it can be reused in different GIS projects.

3. Easy to apply and modify: Symbols and fonts can be easily edited and updated using ArcGIS Pro’s “Style Manager”.

4. Customizable: Can be converted to JSON/XML for detailed customization, or automated using scripts.

5. Compatible with the ArcGIS ecosystem: Can be used directly in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, and adapt to Esri product workflows.

Cons

1. Dependence on Esri products: STYLX is an Esri proprietary format and cannot be directly used in other GIS software such as QGIS.

2. The file may be large: If it contains a large number of symbols or high-resolution textures, the STYLX file may be large, affecting the loading speed.

3. Learning cost: You need to master the “Style Manager” operation and symbol customization methods of ArcGIS Pro.

**4. Version compatibility: **When using STYLX files between different versions of ArcGIS, you may encounter compatibility issues.

Application Scenario

Businesses or government agencies use STYLX to create maps with a unified brand image. Use STYLX in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise to create web maps with a unified style. Apply 3D symbols in the 3D view (Scene Viewer) of ArcGIS Pro to achieve realistic representation of buildings and terrain. It can be used within an organization or project team to share a unified style.

Example

  1. STYLX file example.

  1. Import STYLX file.

File Opening Mode

  1. Convert the file to the ArcGIS Pro .stylx format using SLYR.
